Snow, glorious snow in the French Alps

Ski-in/Ski-out, La face. Chalet Montana, Val d'Isere

What an amazing few weeks in the Alps it has been with widespread heavy snow falling across the French Alps and Europe! Given International Mountain Day is on the horizon –  celebrated Monday, December 11th – we owe it to the mountain gods to say thank you for a glorious start to the ski season. Val d’Isère has seen up to 1 metre of snow in areas and is experiencing consistently cold temps, which is good news as this fresh snow is sticking around to form a solid base. Bluebird skies are peaking above the clouds up high but off-piste coverage still remains thin and rocky. We are expecting it to get very chilly over the weekend with more snow on the way and lows of -19° C.

Looking ahead to this weekend, Courchevel and Méribel will open lifts with superb conditions enabling full access to the Les Trois Vallèes. This is the best pre-Christmas skiing we’ve seen in years! The staff in our 3 Vallèe chalets aren’t wasting any time in getting creative with all the snow, carving ice bars and sculptures. The team at Mont Tremblant wowed us all with their snow built smoke-oven, serving guests some alpine inspired smoked Salmon.

With a cold front moving in, lifts in Les Gets and Morzine are opening two weeks early. Access to the ski area is restricted but the pistes are quiet and conditions idyllic. Lifts will only be open on weekends until the official resort opening on the 23rd December. More snow is predicted for the Portes du Soleil over the duration of next week. Les Gets is expected to reach lows of -7°C in the village, so rug up warm and expect a chilly accent up the mountain. Fresh images from the newly appointed Best Ski Chalet in France, Grande Corniche are picturesque. Surrounded by snow,  the chalet looks out across fir trees heavily laden with snow, as low cloud sits full and heavy in the valley. The chalet staff are having to shovel snow to keep the path clear to the inviting heated infinity pool that clings to mountains edge.

If you are still contemplating what to do this Christmas, it is not too late to secure a white family Christmas in the Alps. Our new and beautiful self-catered apartment in Les Gets, Urban Corniche, is officially our last available property. From the owners of the award-winning Grande Corniche, this stylish residence is ideally located a short walk from the piste and boasts a long list amenities to include a hot-tub and fully-stocked wine cellar… And of course, in true Consensio style a bottle of Perrier Jouët will be chilling upon your arrival. To stay up to date with all the news from the French Alps, don’t miss our weekly live sessions on Instagram, Monday 10 am GMT @consensiochalets. Each week we will be going live with a report from one the top ski resorts in France, covering Courchevel 1850, Mèribel, Val d’Isère, Les Gets and Morzine. Better than a webcam, we will give you a complete rundown of snow conditions and weather – with a preview of the best activities getting underway in the resort.
