The heartwarming story of an anonymous donor who rented out a ski mountain for a children’s hospital
There is an uplifting hero in our society today. This unsung anonymous hero uses their influence and power each year to help poorly children and their carers through the power of philanthropy.
For the third year in a row, an anonymous donor has paid for private hire of the entire Black Mountain Ski Resort in Rumford, Maine so that families from the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital could enjoy a fun, full day of skiing, all for free.
Almost 140 patients, family members, and medical staff from the hospital signed up Wednesday to partake in a day of free snowboarding and skiing as well as free food at Black Mountain in Rumford.
Over the past few years, an unknown donor has been sending a check each year to continue making this special day happen for the young hospital patients and their carers and families.
As a result of this fantastic donation and initiative, the Austin family from Texas said they are now skiing enthusiasts. They particularly love spending time on the slopes with the nurses and doctors who cared for their son, Brayden.
Brayden – A young boy who enjoyed the ski day, thanks to the secret donor
Jennie said her son, Brayden, was treated for three months at the hospital after suffering from a severe twisting of his intestines. His illness, midgut volvulus, caused him to lose half of his large intestine and all of his small intestine.
His father, Adam, had come to spend the day with him on the mountain. He looked happy and appreciative as he looked around at all the hospital workers enjoying exploring the slopes alongside the children. “We will never forget the time that we spent there and the people that we met… There are nurses here today, skiing with us today, that were deeply involved in Brayden’s care at the time.”

It has been incredible to receive this anonymous check each year at Black Mountain, says Deanna Kersey, a spokesperson for the resort. She then explains that they are discussing the possibility of raising money with the hospital to make it an annual tradition, should the secret donor not send a check next year.
Dear anonymous donor, thank you for your generosity to help share the joy of skiing with those who need it most – What a fantastic way to give back to your community!
