As a luxury ski chalet company, reducing emissions in a high-end holiday market might sound challenging, but we’re proving it’s possible. Through committed action across our operations, we’ve made measurable progress in cutting carbon emissions year after year.
1. Leading from the Top
Our commitment to sustainability begins with leadership. The Consensio board is fully invested in driving our emissions reduction goals, setting clear targets, and supporting effective initiatives to reduce our footprint. This top-down commitment is essential for lasting change.
2. Educating Our Team
We believe that sustainable practices start with awareness. Our team is educated on the importance of emissions reduction and equipped with the tools to make low-carbon choices, both within the chalets and in their everyday lives.
3. Collaborating with Property Owners
We work closely with our property owners to implement eco-friendly changes. By aligning on sustainability goals, we’ve been able to make impactful upgrades, from improved energy systems to sustainable waste management.
4. Focusing on Carbon Hotspots: Travel, Energy, and Food
Our efforts are directed towards the most significant sources of emissions in our business. Over the past three years, we’ve achieved a 30% decrease in the average carbon footprint per occupied week:
- 2021/22: 2,110 kg CO2e per week
- 2022/23: 1,606 kg CO2e per week
- 2023/24: 1,407 kg CO2e per week
This reduction is a result of our focus on three main areas:
- Travel: We encourage staff not to fly to and from resorts. At HQ, we have nearly halved our business travel emissions by opting out of flights, avoiding hotel stays, and instead finding eco-friendly alternatives.
- Energy: Within our chalets, we’ve reduced electricity consumption and decreased the amount of firewood burned, which helps to keep our energy emissions in check without sacrificing the comfort of our guests.
- Food: Reducing emissions from meals has been another priority. We’ve cut down on red meat, which has a higher carbon footprint, and have also minimised food waste, allowing us to deliver gourmet dining with a lighter environmental impact.
5. Consistent Reduction in Emissions
Through these efforts, we’ve achieved a total emissions reduction of 23% in just two years, from 333,949 kg CO2e in 2021/22 to 255,635 kg CO2e in 2023/24.
Looking Ahead
Reducing emissions in the luxury travel industry isn’t easy, but at Consensio Chalets, we are determined to show it’s possible. By focusing on education, collaboration, and targeted improvements, we’re leading the way in sustainable luxury travel. Thank you to ecollective for recognising our efforts to make the ski chalet experience both luxurious and eco-conscious.
Our journey is ongoing, and we’re committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainability in the seasons to come.
