Send It for Climate: Join Protect Our Winters in Saving Winter Sports
When it comes to tackling the urgent issue of climate change, it’s not just about raising awareness; it’s about taking action. One organization that’s leading the charge in turning passion into impact is Protect Our Winters (POW). If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, especially in the skiing community, you’ll want to know about their new initiative called “Send It for Climate.” This campaign is all about leveraging the collective power of outdoor lovers to drive systemic change in climate policy. Let’s dive into what POW is, why their work is crucial for the ski industry, and how you can get involved.
Who is Protect Our Winters (POW)?
Protect Our Winters (POW) is a registered climate action charity that’s making waves by uniting passionate outdoor enthusiasts and turning them into effective climate advocates. Their goal? To achieve systemic solutions to the climate crisis by influencing policy changes at the highest levels of government. Founded by snowboarder Jeremy Jones, POW recognizes that outdoor lovers, including skiers and snowboarders, have a unique voice that can shape policies for the better.
The Ski Industry and Climate Change:
If you’re a winter sports enthusiast, you’re likely no stranger to the impacts of climate change on our beloved mountain landscapes. Rising temperatures, shorter winters, and unpredictable weather patterns are threatening the very essence of skiing and snowboarding. This isn’t just an environmental concern—it’s a direct hit on the heart of the ski industry. Resorts, businesses, and communities that rely on winter tourism are facing uncertainty as climate change threatens to alter the landscapes we hold dear.
Introducing the Send It for Climate Initiative:
In response to this critical issue, POW is launching the “Send It for Climate” initiative. This campaign aims to unite the outdoor community, specifically those who love skiing, snowboarding, and other snow-centric activities, to demand meaningful climate policy changes. The initiative’s name, “Send It,” draws from the ski and snowboard culture—a call to action to give it your all, just as we need to give our all to address climate change.
How Does Send It for Climate Work?
The initiative centres around sending physical postcards with personalized messages to policymakers. Why postcards? Because they carry a personal touch that resonates more deeply than a simple online petition. By putting pen to paper and sharing why climate action matters to you, you’re creating a powerful message that can’t be ignored.
Support the Initiative:
You might be wondering, “How can I get involved?” Whether you’re a retailer, an individual skier, or simply someone who cares about our planet’s future, there are several ways to support the Send It for Climate initiative:
1. Send a Postcard: Postcards written will be sent to a Freepost address where POW will collect them and take them to the Ministers. People can send a postcard in a few different ways:
- Look out for POW UK postcards at Ellis Brigham stores and events that POW UK are attending e.g. National Snow Week
- Write your own postcard and send it to ‘Freepost SENDIT’. (You can download the POW postcard here)
2. Attend a Workshop: Attend POW’s carbon literacy training workshops to gain a deeper understanding of climate issues and solutions.
3. Support Financially: Donate funds to cover the cost of postcards and other campaign-related expenses.
The Send It for Climate initiative is more than just an advocacy campaign—it’s a way for the skiing community to directly engage with policymakers and demand meaningful climate action. Protect Our Winters provides a platform for skiers and outdoor enthusiasts to be the change they want to see in the world. By joining forces, we can make a lasting impact on climate policy and ensure a future where skiing, snowboarding, and the great outdoors can be enjoyed for generations to come. So, let’s come together, send our messages, and make our voices heard in the halls of power for the sake of our planet and the sports we love.
