Introducing the Only Kids Brand You Need to Know This Winter.
To date, the children’s skiwear market has been pretty boring. If we asked you who your favourite kids’ skiwear brand was, is there anybody in particular who immediately springs to mind? Most jackets look similar and parents pick up whatever they can find online when searching for their own stuff or they borrow hand-me-downs from friends. Not any more…
The recent launch of Roarsome, Skiwear for Kids has suddenly become this season’s must-have item. We met up with the founders to find out how they are turning the market on its head. What is Roarsome, you ask? Quite simply, they make fully functional, all-in-one, animal-themed skiwear for kids. (Read to the end to find out how to get 10% off your order!)
Can you tell us how the brand started?
We noticed that every kid on the slopes looked the same when wearing their helmets and goggles. Parents place huge importance on being able to easily spot their children from a distance, but they had limited options for any distinct skiwear.
Children between the ages of 2-7 love dressing up as their favourite characters/superheroes at home, yet when they get to the mountains (the most heroic landscape on the planet!) they were made to look like everyone else. Magic was being missed. We had to do something about it.
How did you create your designs?
We set ourselves the challenge of designing a ski suit which was a cross between a superhero and an animal and started to reimagine the boring ski suits you see on kids up and down the mountains.
To bring our suits to life we recruited the help of an amazing children’s illustrator who we found on Instagram, called Jane Foster (check her out she’s amazing) and asked if she could create a character and storybook for each suit design which would be included with every order.
They look fantastic, but are they practical?
Absolutely! More important than looking cool, we needed our suits to do the job. We like to say that we put the fun in functional as our suits have all of the technical requirements to keep the kids warm and dry after long days in the snow.
All suits are unisex and fully waterproof, including microfiber insulation, taped seams and aqua seal zips. The skiwear has breathable lining and outer fabric, quick dry spandex thumb mitts, inner-boot covers and outer-boot zips, as well as adjustable hoods which can be worn with, or without a helmet.
Considering the fact that our whole brand revolves around the great outdoors, it’s important to us that we do what we can for the planet. We use recyclable fabrics, eco-friendly dyes, PVC free clothing treatments and faux fur on our hoods.
We also want to make parents’ lives easier, so we added secret pockets for mountain snacks as well as a special coating to prevent stains. All of our suits are machine washable and tumble dryer safe too!
What’s been the biggest hurdle while trying to launch the brand?
As a startup, we are constantly having to find solutions to unexpected problems, and juggling tight budgets is always tough, but the funniest issue we faced was probably during our first shoot.
We went to St Anton with only a handful of samples, no kids, one cameraman and an extremely optimistic blind faith that everything would go to plan.
Darius (our mad cameraman) turned up at the airport with a small backpack of cameras and drones but no ski gear and we found out on the plane that he couldn’t even ski! If that wasn’t enough, we had to convince a whole kindergarten of Austrian kids into doing what we wanted through a mixture of pantomime acting and broken English!
It could have been an absolute disaster, but the kids were actually brilliant, and Darius managed to get some awesome footage by sliding around on his backside while flying his drones so it all worked out well in the end!
What is the message of Roarsome?
It’s easy to get stuck to screens these days, on mobile phones, video games and TVs so we want to remind people that we can all have fun outside too. The world is a beautiful place, especially in the mountains so we want to capture the imagination of children and adults alike and encourage outdoor play.
And the question we’ve all been asking… Do you have any plans to create adult suits?
Alas no. If we let adults also wear the suits, it wouldn’t be as special for the children. As a boutique children’s wear brand, we want to focus all our attention on giving kids the opportunity to stand out and express themselves in their own fun way on the slopes so they can be the superhero in their own stories.
